Technology and Happiness in Civilization and Its Discontents and Waitin
Technology and Happiness in Civilization and Its Discontents and Waiting for Godot Happiness is something most humans value above everything else. The various things in life that make us happy, such as family, friends, and cool cars, to name a few, are the very things we hold dearest to us and place the most value on. People fill their lives with things that please them to ease the gloom that comes as a result of the seemingly never-ending trials and tribulations of life. We gladly accept any amount of pleasure we can extract from the monotony of our daily lives, and we will do almost anything to achieve happiness. Throughout Civilization and Its Discontents, Freud talks about happiness-why we don't have it and how to attain it. He blames civilization for people's general unhappiness. Civilization is obsessed with technology, figuring out how the world works, and controlling nature. This focus on and excess of technology and science may have advantages, but it also has many disadvantages, the main one being unhappiness. Civilization hinders man's instinctual drives. Man is born with these innate drives, and when he is not able to fulfill them, he becomes miserable. There are restrictions placed on the members of a society through cultural norms and beliefs. All these things put together add up to an unhappy society. Freud believes that aggression is a primal instinct, and civilization thwarts this instinct, making man unhappy. Civilized society controls man's tendency toward aggression through rules and laws and the presence of authority. These mechanisms are put in place to guarantee safety and happiness for all individuals in a society. However, the necessity of suppressing the aggressive drive in m... ...r us, and we will become lazy. What are we going to do all day if we have machines to make meals for us, to do our laundry, and to clean our houses? We would do nothing. We would become like Vladimir and Estragon in Waiting for Godot-we would be doing nothing more than existing, which we have seen does not bring much happiness. The fact that happiness is valuable is proven when one takes a look at the various aspects of an individual's life. Each person surrounds him/herself with the people and things that bring him/her the most pleasure. Our happiness is so important to us that we will do almost anything to be happy. While many people believe that technological advancements can bring happiness, there are too many problems that come along with these advancements that in the long run do not bring happiness. Better technology does not equal more happiness.

New Technology: Police Body Worn Cameras Essay
Our department is currently going to purchase new technology in the form of officer worn cameras. Over the next five years this technology will be put in place. The police department will see many benefits from this technology in the areas of evidence preservation, reduced liability and improved efficiency for the police department. The officer worn camera is a device that has become cost effective and efficient in size and capabilities. The camera is attached to the Officers uniform and allows the officer to capture video and audio of his activities throughout his tour of duty. This will be used to document traffic stops, consent searches and ââ¬Å"res gestaeâ⬠statements made to officers. The officer worn camera will reduce false allegations made against officers, and the investigative overhead that comes along with these allegations. The future benefits from the officer worn cameras in the reduction of liability to the city, the police department and the officer. According to Sir Ronnie Flanaganââ¬â¢s policing review published last week, not only do cameras provide improved evidence, they can also reduce the time taken to file incident reports by 22 per cent, which would give officers an extra 50 minutes of patrol time per officer per day, according to the report (Kelly, 2008) In this new era of budget shortfalls and diminished manpower this new technology can provide a more efficient police department by freeing up time that is normally spent on unnecessary investigations. Implementing reporting procedures using cameras and video can also reduce time spent on report writing duties. In Conclusion, the purchase of the officer worn cameras will reduce liability in cases where false accusations are made. Video statements can be used preserve evidence and the capability of reporting will create a more efficient police department. References: Foster, R. E. (2005). Police technology. An Overview of Progressivism, the New Deal, and the Fair Deal in the US Nameï ¼Å¡Xuan Wang Course: HIST 13C Date: 2017-08-26 The 20th century is one of the influential periods in the history of the United States. The period was characterized by the introduction of a wide range of policy frameworks with the purpose of bringing about necessary social and economic change. The government based interventions relied on the premise of ensuring that the country development was sustainable and equitable. Importantly, the New Deal initiative was initiated during the Great Depression in the 1930s; therefore, unlike the progressivism, this initiative was inclined towards reforming the lives of US citizens both socially and economically. Therefore, the creation of employment through government recruitment in various posts including firefighting and military was a major initiative of alleviating the crisis. Additionally, restoring public confidence in the government system was one of the essential approaches that would facilitate increased trust in the government, which was influenced through the enactment of monetary policy initiatives (Billington and Jackson 2017). Further, this reformative endeavor was characterized by the use of agricultural statutes to ensure that farmers in the rural areas were adequately empowered. Increasing the rate of employment would be vital in ensuring that the recovery was undertaken from a holistic point of view. Notably, this approach had a unique way as it strived to enhance inclusivity through increased empowerment as opposed to the Progressivism that was more inclined towards dea ling with specific economic and social issues. International Management Welspun Group of India
Question: Discuss about theInternational Managementfor Welspun Group of India. Answer: Introduction Globalization is a process through which the businesses start operating at an international scale. The aim of the assignment is to analyze the problems faced by the Welspun group of India while expanding it operation to UK and US. The paper addresses the procedure of globalization to understand success of the organization and the problems faced. The company has grown from capital base of US$250,000 to US$3 billion. Welspun group of companies began its operation in 1985 in a small town of India. It started as a polyester manufacturing company. The company has now expanded its branches to fifty countries over the globe (Beck 2015). The company has been identified as one of the fastest growing global companies and a leading company is market of textiles, yarns and pipes. The company has its expansion on countries such a UK, US, Portugal, Mexico and Saudi Arabia and has a business relationship with foreign companies such as Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Wal-Mart and Target. Identification of the Problems and Solutions Expansion of Welspun Group of Companies The Welspun group of companies was established in a small town of India in Maharashtra. Over the span of ten years, the group had set up two manufacturing plants. With the rise in the investment made by the country the business segment was also rising. The Welspun group of companies had diversified its products from polyester to pipes, cotton textiles and yarns. The revenue and the profit of the company have been rising steadily since 2007. The international subsidiary was set up in 2000 in New York. This was done to cater the marketing needs of US and stay in close proximity with their international client that is Target and Wal-Mart (Sampler 2014). The group was steadily expanding from 2000 to 2005 in the segments of pipes, textiles and energy sector. The first big move was in 2006 when the group bought an acquisition of one of the leading companies in US that was also a supplier to Wimbledon Tennis championships. Until the year 2010, the company has established its subsidiaries in various parts of the world. The focus of the company in 2010 was on increasing its capacity in energy and infrastructural sector that is one of the fastest growing industries in India as well as emerging markets (Kar 2015). The main reason for the expansion of the company in such a short span of time is simultaneous concentration on geographical product diversification or the growth of the company. The first problem identified with such a strategy is that it is cumbersome and risky to market new products into new market, as it requires different sets of capabilities. Despite of this problem Welspun group of companies was careful in its selection of expansion of products and market so that the limited resources can be utilized optimally (Cavusgil et al. 2014). The focus of the company was on developed countries and not the underdeveloped or developing countries that helped the company eradicate the problems that it faced. The group used diversified products in its expansion such as pipes, infrastructure, energy, textile that were not related. The strategy that has helped the organization in expansion in international countries is its constant evaluation of the strategies and the structure of the organization. The company also uses off shoring and outsourcing strategy for development and expansion of its subsidiaries. The aim of the strategy is to minimize the cost of production. The business partners of the company such as Wal-Mart and Target would collaborate with the manufacturers in low cost countries and act as suppliers (Singh and Agarwal 2014). Since India is a low, its country Welspun group grabbed in this opportunity and acted as the suppliers to the leading retailers of United States. The motto of the company Dare to commit has helped the group in expansion for experiencing phenomenal growth (Mellahi et al. 2015). The two faces behind the growth of the company are B.K Goenka and R.R. Madewewala. Despite of the problems faced by the company it as successful in the expansion of the company in the international markets. The challenges that were faces were due to limited capital resources and small and medium enterprises. The annual growth rate of the company is thirty percent since 1995 that is higher than the average standard. The business of expansion is risky (Hirst et al. 2015). The Welspun group of companies was not only successful in expansion of its business in international market but was also successful in diversifying its products in the home market and expanding new products into the new market. Expanding the new products, existing products and diversified in the international market was not easy the Welspun group had to take many risks and face many challenges. The company was involved in large amounts of investment that was a sky affair. The company was not sure whether the investments would turn into the profit or not. The first pipe manufacturing plant was set up with the risk of US hundred million dollar, which was paid multiple times. The risk is high when the company gets involved with the new establishment (Joshi and Raichurkar 2016). The company should ensure that the strategies that it has formulated are implemented efficiently to get a professional outcome. The strategies implemented should not only focus on expansion in new markers but should include both expansion and diversification. Analyzing the market situation of the country that it is planning to expand is essential to avoid the risks and uncertainties (Baylis et al. 2013). The analysis of the country should be categorized in proper heads. The analysis should be on the basis of target market, customer analysis, competitor analysis and economic analysis. The strategies implemented by Welspun group of companies were optimal and efficient as it focused on both diversification and expansion. Another problem faced by the companies while expanding its operation in international market is the risks of competitors. As the company expands its operation in the market there are many competitor present that has already established its operations. Hence, it is difficult to expand its business and attract the customers in already well-established market. The objectives should be set in such a way so that it is achievable and attainable. The objective set should be practical. The concentration of Welspun group of companies is on expansion and not the competitors (Ambos and Hkanson 2014). The Welspun group of companies has expanded its business in a very short span of time and this is only possible due to the strategies that it has used for its international expansion. The two strategies used by the company are: Geographical diversification Product diversification These strategies have helped the company gain popularity in the international market and attract larger customer base. The risk identifies while expansion was of availability of little resources for expansion. In addition, expansion requires huge amount of capital investment, which is difficult for the companies to attain due to the rules of the banks for providing loans. If the business fails then it becomes difficult for the company to repay its loans putting the business at risk. The strategies used by the company have helped in the expansion ad globalization of the company (Pucik 2013). Conclusion The study on the Welspun Group of Companies concludes that the company was successful in its international expansion. It sets a good example for understanding the process of globalization. The company has successfully expanded its business to other fifty countries in a very short span of time and this was only possible because of the strategies used by the company. The study identifies that the company through its effective strategy formulation properly handled the problems and issues of globalization. The challenges that the company had to face was achieved through proper organizational structure and strategies. References Ambos, B. and Hkanson, L., 2014. The Metamorphosis
The Metamorphosis- Critical Essay Frank Kafka is considered one of the most influential writers of all time. Helmut Richter would agree with this statement. Richter agreed that Kafka was a very prominent figure in world literature and was amazed by his mechanics and word usage. I feel that his essay is supportive of Kafkas writing, but also leaves out many important details in its brevity. Richter did not include Kafkas flaws and tendencies in his essay. Helmut Richter analyzed the plot of The Metamorphosis in his essay. He depicts the main plot of the story to be Gregors failure at his work, which leads to his death. The climax of the story starts off early in the book. When Gregor wakes up one morning, he realizes that he has turned into a giant insect. Gregor was a salesman and his job required that he was very determined in his work. Kafka proves to us that Gregor did not do a good job as a salesman by transforming into a bug: a strong work force. We will write a custom essay on The Metamorphosis- Critical specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Kafkas use of this metaphor stresses the poor work that Gregor does as a salesman. Many people would argue that Kafka reflects his personal life in The Metamorphosis. These people would describe it as an autobiographical work. Kafkas parents were very similar to that of Gregor. He was born into a wealthy family and his father was an overbearing man. His mother was a very nice woman, as Gregors was in the novel, but she often took the side of his father. The striking resemblance of the families is that of Gregors sister. Kafkas sister, like Gregors sister Grete, was the only person in his family that was supportive of him and that he was close to. Helmut Richter admired the self-depiction that Kafka included in The Metamorhosis. Richter discusses the main theme of The Metamorhosis as change. He feels that Gregors entire family, not just Gregor, undergo a metamorphosis. When Gregor turns into an insect, the life of everyone in his family is deeply changed. Gregors family often takes the work that he does for them for granted. Gregors father found himself in some trouble with his business and Gregor was forced to help support the family. The unappreciative, lazy family is greatly changed when Gregor undergoes his metamorphosis in the climax of the story. Gregors family soon realizes that they all of their lives will be much harder with Gregor as an insect. The most obvious metamorphosis is that of Gregor. Throughout his entire life, Gregor has let other people make his decisions for him. The physical metamorphosis that he undergoes is the first occurrence in his life that no one in his family has told him what to do. This change allows Gregor to find his inner self and disconnect himself from the orders and hardships brought out by his family. By means of his transformation into a giant insect, Gregor has been released from his responsibility to support his family without having to assume the guilt of letting them down. He has also changed from the provider to the dependent. Richter brings up the point that the transformation of Gregor was not necessarily a bad one. Another theme that is displayed throughout The Metamorphosis is that of liberation. Both Gregor and his family are set free of some burden during the metamorphosis. Richter believed that Gregors metamorphosis released him from a workingman back into a young boy. Gregor was a prisoner to his insect form after the metamorphosis, but he was freed from the burdens of his life and the burdens placed upon him by his family.
